Matthew Snyder, a California native now living in Socorro, earned a BFA from prestigious California College of the Arts. His clean, minimalist metal sculpture is now available at Amapola artists’ co-op Gallery, where he is our newest guest member.
Matt tells us that his newer works will offer a “more realistic interpretation ” of botanical influences, but his current work is delightful, riffs on kelp, corals, bare trees, transformed into candle stands and more. He forms images of marine life into artistic statements that retain their beauty on land. Kelp at the mercy of gravity becomes a blob, but under Snyder’s artistry it is linear, elegant and graceful.
Snyder works primarily in steel, using “cold form” methods, hand bending the metal through a variety of jigs and fixtures, utilizing different welding techniques.
