November Featured Artists Theme Metamorphosis

Diaz-Arntzen and Kaleta November Featured Artists

We at Amapola artists’ co-op Gallery are an accomplished group of oddballs, none more so than our Featured Artists for November, Cristina Diaz-Arntzen and Elzbieta Kaleta. Each comes to us from elsewhere: Cristina from Monterrey in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and Elzbieta from Cracow, Poland. Each is an American citizen, New Mexican by choice, ridiculously bilingual, talented, and ours!

Punch Quilt Artist Cristina Diaz-Arntzen

This is the work of November featured artist Cristina Diaz-Arnzten at Amapola Gallery Albuquerque.

After a long career in bilingual education that includes an award from the NEA, Cristina turned to the creation of colorful punch quilts. These lightweight, vibrant and durable wall hangings incorporate many images of the Southwest : Kokopelli and Native pottery, hot-air balloons and the Rail Runner, lizards and bears, Navajo ladies in traditional dress, and more. Including some hovering hummingbirds — which brings us to Elzbieta Kaleta, a photographer and paper artist with an eye for hummers and much else.

Photographer and Paper Artist Elzbieta Kaleta

This rooster is the work of November Featured Artists, paper artist Elzbieta Kaleta at Amapola Gallery Albuquerque.

Elzbieta also has a teaching background, having taught animal genetics at the graduate level at Jagiellonian University in Cracow before moving to the US. (and completing her own post-doc research at Harvard Med School!) Using southwestern and animal designs, paint, calligraphy and photography, and her own admiration and respect for nature, Elzbieta turns the traditional Polish art of paper cutting on its head, in a most delightful way. Her photographs celebrate the beauty of nature and our shared place in this world — with basking cats, chattering crows, hummers, and the historic architecture of New Mexico.

Both Cristina and Elzbieta still teach but now their subject matter is art.

Come see this exhibit of their work, “Metamorphosis : Fabric and Paper in the Art Works of Cristina Diaz-Arntzen and Elzbieta Kaleta.” Reception in conjunction with Citywide First Friday ARTScrawl, 4pm – 7pm Friday November 4, 2016.

The show runs through November at Amapola Gallery, 205 Romero, NW, on the Plaza in Old Town. Open 10-5 daily.
