“Knots on the Cutting Edge. ” That’s the theme for Amapola artists co-op Gallery ‘s March Featured Artist exhibition. I say we could call it “Runs with Scissors. ” Quilter and macrame knotter Marge Farmer Page, and paper cutter Sara Carley, employ knots and scissors in their artwork and cut quite a swath doing it.
Marge’s quilts range from crib- sized with charming baby – themed fabric to queen – bed sized artistic statements like the traditional “log cabin. ” They are meticulously designed and realized, suitable for bed, couch or wall. She even has a line of pillow cases, place mats and napkins, and pot holders for you bakers. Her charming macrame creations hold plants, wine bottles or simply your eye.
Sara Carley studied the art of paper cutting with acclaimed artist Elzbieta Kaleta (also in our gallery) and it’s fun to see how different their work is. Sara comes from a music background (with a double major in voice and oboe) and her subject matter is often musicians.
Between her years as a band teacher and her mastery of many instruments, Sara gets the details correct every time.
In addition to music, Sara derives ideas from written descriptions in the many books she reads. Combined with her tongue in cheek humor this results in a nifty line of fantastical birds, bumptious bears and dramatic dragons.
So if you enjoy knots and scissors, quilts and cut paper, come meet the artists Friday, March 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. “Knots on the Cutting Edge ” runs through March at Amapola Gallery, 205 Romero N.W, on the Plaza in Old Town. Open daily from 10 to 5.
