Glass artist Anita Caress is a shining addition to Amapola co-op Gallery. A resident of Albuquerque for 58 years and counting, she was introduced to the process of glass fusion while volunteering at her son’s middle school. Virtue got its reward that time!
Anita has continued to create with fused glass, but she really loves glass blowing (think Dale Chihuly), which, she says, is an adrenaline rush, all go! go! go! (My mind thinks, what if you forget — and inhale?) It is an expensive process, requiring special equipment, ovens, etc. So while she has studied at Pilchuck Glass School in Washington state, (founded by Chihuly), Anita rents time at a Santa Fe studio where she studies with her mentor, internationally -known glass artist Elodie Holmes.
A wonderful product of Anita’s creativity are her glorious glass flowers, which are “gathered, stretched and shaped –but not blown. ” These bright colored blooms can even be placed outside, where they provide a spot of color all year ’round and need never be watered. Along with these Anita shows plates, vases, serving pieces and more. Come see what’s new at Amapola Gallery!
Open 10-5 daily — where you’ll always meet the artists!
After a lifetime batting words around like shuttlecocks in an endless game of badminton, it is a pleasure to use them to promote Old Town and my fellow artists at Amapola Gallery. –Kristin Parrott, carver, painter and acorn stuffer
