Turn of the Lathe, Stroke of the Brush
Amapola Gallery’s Featured Artists for September are Mark McAllaster and Vera Russell. Their exhibit is themed “Turn of the Lathe, Stroke of the Brush.”
Mark McAllaster is a wood turner extraordinaire who uses a variety of woods local and exotic to create his stunning bowls and candle holders. Sizes range from small to large and the grain, color and natural characteristics of each piece of wood are emphasized. Turquoise inlay frequently provides the finishing touch.
Vera Russell’s oil paintings are about noticing the extraordinary aspects of ordinary things. The unique play of light on an apple or a mesa, the dance of rain-filled clouds. Vera’s is a voice singing of the Southwest landscape and the poetry and beauty of the everyday.
Come enjoy “Turn of the Lathe, Stroke of the Brush,” the work of this creative combo, during the entire month of September.
Meet the artists Friday, September second, from 4-7 p.m during a reception in conjunction with First Friday Artscrawl.
Amapola Gallery is an artists cooperative of 40 local members. The Gallery is open daily 10-5 in Historic Romero House at 205 Romero NW on the Plaza in Old Town.
I like to play with words almost as much as I love playing with paint, stone, ink … Lucky me to have a blog outlet with my gallery since 1980, Amapola artists’ co-op Gallery. -Kristin Parrott, carver, painter and acorn stuffer
