“Earth and Sky,” an exciting new exhibit at Amapola Gallery beginning February 1, features works by potter Iris McDowell and painter Kay Richards.
Iris McDowell creates elegant yet functional pottery with lyrical lines and intense colors. Her glazes of burgundy, turquoise, green, purple, deep blue, brown and metallic black combine with selective applications of copper leaf and wire as well as the claybody itself to transform into unique pieces, each high fired and food safe. For the wall, she manipulates clay slabs into what she calls “wall blankets,” pretty as a picture and using the same intense colors.
Color is what painter Kay Richards is all about. She works with watercolors, acrylics and oils to create skies, florals and landscapes, each gleaming with the strong light and saturated hues of New Mexico. The pieces radiate life and joy, instantly brightening and cheering any room in which they are hung. Viewers add their own interpretations as they explore the images, discovering serendipitous details hidden to the casual eye.
Earth and Sky meet at Amapola Gallery in February. You can meet the artists on Friday, February 7, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. That’s right, Amapola Gallery’s Featured Artists for February are holding their First Friday ArtsCrawl reception ALL DAY February 7. The hours from 4 to 7 are too few to contain the excitement!
