Ancient Cultures a highlight for Featured Artists June ’16 at Amapola

Ceramic wall artist K.D. Fullerton and bead artist Mary Ellen Merrigan share a love of the art of ancient cultures. They offer distinctive interpretations in their outstandingly original pieces as Amapola Gallery’s Featured Artists for June.

This wall sculpture is from K.D. Fullerton, one of the featured artists October at Amapola Gallery.

K.D.’s ponies, people, masks and fantastical figures, in black, white and earth tones, show a strong Native American influence. She incorporates metal found objects, cross -hatching, geometrics in surface finish and in form. The pieces almost resemble three -dimensional petroglyphs created by someone with a wild but respectful sense of humor.

This colorful necklace represents one of the offerings of Mary Ellen Merrigan, Featured Artists June and Amapola Gallery Albuquerque.

Mary Ellen Merrigan ‘s creations evoke tribal art from around the world : Here a breath of the Orient, there ancient Egypt or the South Seas — as well as Native America. She constantly expands her artistic vocabulary with new techniques, unusual bead “finds ” and endless sophisticated combinations. Wearable ART, indeed.

Both K.D. Fullerton and Mary Ellen Merrigan mix native cultural influences, great artistry, respect for ancestry and impressive expertise in their chosen mediums. The results are some of the most distinctive work at Amapola.

Come meet the artists and enjoy the artists’ reception Friday, June 3 from 4-7 p.m as a part of First Friday ARTScrawl. “Ancient Cultures Distinctive Interpretations” is on display through June 30 at the Gallery. Visit Amapola co-op Gallery any day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

After a lifetime batting words around like shuttlecocks in an endless game of badminton, it is a pleasure to use them to promote Old Town and my fellow artists at Amapola Gallery. –Kristin Parrott, carver, painter and acorn stuffer
